Comme toutes les Hautes Aspres, il semble que St Marsal ait été un lieu d'habitat pour les hommes du néolithique. Trois dolmens se dressent (comme ils peuvent !) à l'Ouest du village, témoignant de ce lointain passé (-2200).
Le lieu-dit de Saint-Marsal apparaît pour la première fois dans un document de Charles le chauve en 869. Il appartenait à la paroisse de Saint-Pierre de la Serra.
